Manual shift reverse gear issue

I have had this problem since I bought the car almost two weeks ago. I think it is one of two problems, one cheap to fix, and one expensive to fix.

Here is what happens. When I am stopped, in my driveway for instance, I have trouble putting the car in reverse gear. I lift up the collar on the shift lever, move the lever to the right and then down, and about 3/4 of the time the car is not in gear. I will slowly let out the clutch and apply a little gas and it just revs the engine a bit. Sometimes it has gone in to gear but I don't know until I start to let out the clutch. Other times, it sinks into gear with a solid feeling thump ( not a bad feeling, just an "ahh, that's it" feeling) and I know I am in gear.

I have read a lot about shift coupler issues and fixes with zip ties and hose clamps. That sounds great. But mostly people talk about problems with first and second gear, not so much reverse.

On the Saab site website I saw this in their FAQ and it really has me nervous. sounds like a huge and expensive job and wayyyy above my skill to do by myself:

"Reverse Gear Issues

The Saab 9000 cars have had issues with reverse gear Syncro rings failing which causes issues with getting the shifter into reverse gear. When this happens you must disassemble the transmission and replace the reverse gear and the Syncro. Most mechanics will want to go into the transmission and build it as well. "

How many of you think it is just the shift coupler? Also, I could have sworn that somewhere I found a photograph of somebody's coupler that they had managed to fix like this, but now I can't find it. If anybody has a link to that picture it would help me show the guy I work with who has much more car skill than I do.
