Before 94, I believe, reverse was not synchronized. But whether you have a synchro or not, the fix is to push the clutch in and then quickly, but very gently, ease it towards reverse. You will feel the gears trying to mesh and slowing down. If you feel or hear grinding, you are doing it too hard. Then, when you feel that the meshing noise is almost stopped, pop it in gear.
