The 96 9000 Owner's Manual says that the whole system (AT sump + lines + coolers) contains seven quarts. So if you guess that the coolers mounted on the radiators plus lines hold 1.5 to 2.0 quarts, that means that the AT sump and Torque Converter have between five and five and one half quarts.
When you drain the fluid from the plug, and change the filter, you're not going to drain fluid from the torque converter. The distance on the dipstick from MAX 80C to MIN 40 C is approximately one quart. I would suggest that if you add three and one half(3.5) quarts ATF to the drained AT sump, you will be drivable until your new dipstick arrives, and you can adjust the level.
When I got my car, the trans dipstick was broken same as yours, and maybe the plastic bits are still in the sump. I bought a new stick from eEuro,
and have been running -1.5 qt to -0.25 quart for at least six months, filling the sump with a quart per month. I need to pull the trans and replace the front seal on mine, but won't bother until it's two quarts a month.
