Maybe its me only. I think the PO made a marking on the metal part of the dipstick .5in from where the plastic part ends. I would always measure it 1 or 2 hours after turning off the engine. If I see that part wet with oil, I can say it is at the right level. So far I been using this technique for 5 years now without any problem with my autotrans.
