24 hrs of lemons 9000 fuel vapor lock (?) problem

Hey guys. Just got back from the 24 hours of lemons in south carolina this weekend. we ran a 1986 saab 9000 turbo for the second time. we ran into a few problems this time and i need some help with one of them. the car would run great for about an hour or so and the developed a miss/stumble. make a long story short, we believe we have a vapor lock problem. tell if this theory makes any sense. the fuel filter feels very hot to the touch (yes we know its in the engine compartment), adding fuel seems to help the condition (the incoming fuel is obviously a lot cooler). once the fuel tank gets down to about half tank (about an hour of driving on track) the condition appears. we think the circulating fuel heats up and doesn't have time to cool before its picked back up. someone suggested that a fuel pump check valve was malfunctioning causing the pump to work almost continuesly. i pulled the pump today but don't see a check valve nor do i see anything wrong at the tank. anyone have any thoughts?
