I have Saab's "sports chassis" suspension on my CSE, effectively the Aero suspension, and that's only a bit lower, stiffer and more controlled than standard. I like it, and if your suspension is tired (who wouldn't be after 18 years) I'm pretty sure you could fit the same thing although your car is a bit lighter than the later body shape. You have auto transmission which adds some weight anyway - auto cars come with different front springs, but my own auto seems to work fine with the Sports Chassis. The problem will be finding a kit as they seem to have dropped out of sight recently.
Typical after-market lowering springs and dampers would be quite a chunk stiffer than standard and from what you say that wouldn't suit you. Koni do a kit with adjustable dampers but there's surprisingly little feedback about these, I just wonder what springs are in there.
As Everett says, if you post the colour markings on your springs there are those (maybe Joe98) who can tell you more. There are three colours in the format A-B-C-B-A. Try searching for "spring color".
There used to be a wide range of struts & dampers available from Sachs/Boge, the OEM supplier, but last time I looked there was a choice of one.
