9000CS overboosting Posted by sam96CS [Email] ![]() ![]() |
My '96 9000CS automatic (147k miles) is overboosting, resulting sometimes in fuel cutoff. Will greatly appreciate any and all advice.
The e-clip that connects the actuator rod to the wastegate is secure and is not rusted.
I can move the actuator rod by hand, and it snaps back, so the wastegate isn't stuck, and the actuator spring is working. The condition of the actuator's diaphragm is unknown, and it could be the problem.
I installed a new wastegate actuator hose (Saab part number 9169467) last May. I removed it for careful inspection. It is in excellent condition and is not obstructed.
No check engine light, but there is a pending code P1549 (Boost Pressure Control Malfunction) with the following freeze frame information:
Fuel System 1: CL (closed loop)
Fuel System 2: CL-Fault
Calculated load (%): 25.10
Engine coolant temperature: 185 (F)
Short Term Fuel Trim B1 (%): -3.91
Long Term Fuel Trim B1 (%): 25.00
Manifold Air Pressure (in Hg): 11.22
Engine rpm: 1708
Vehicle speed MPH: 42
In the above instance, I was loafing in 4th gear (it will overboost to the point of fuel cutoff in all gears) and pushed the throttle maybe half way but not enough to make it kick down to a lower gear.
The physical connection between the turbo and the actuator is good, and the physical connection between the actuator and the wastegate lever is good. I distrust the actuator, but I'm not inclined to replace a part that I don't know for sure is defective. Is there a way to test the actuator?
Both the actuator and MAP sensor are original parts. Which is the most likely to be defective?
