The springs are given colour codes in the form of five dots and for a typical Aero these would be
Front: orange, white, yellow, white, orange
Rear: yellow, green, yellow, green, yellow
You can find out more via the Search box, look for posts by Joe98 or old ones by Aeroguy. You might find different springs on auto cars, and on later "sports chassis" kits. Also, automatic cars usually have beefed-up springs are the front
I don't have the EPC on my laptop but as far as I remember my version doesn't show these colour codes, just the part numbers. If you'd like these, tell me the year(s) your interested in and I could look them up at the weekend after I stagger back home from the big city.
Just guessing here - it might be counter-intuitive but a stiff spring with a short free length would likely give a higher ride height than a less stiff one with the same free length. Just an illustration, may not obtain in reality, but the part numbers and codes are probably the way to go.
You are correct about what the "free length" is.
