when you turn the key inside the lock cylinder.... all it is accomplishing is spinning a barrel with electronic connector tabs inside of the ignition switch... at the backside of the steering wheel column...
this switch is not very robust...
what happened to my car when it wasn't working properly (not starting, dash lights acting weird upon key turning)...
....the tumbler was worn and out of alignment inside the switch and it was causing the connections inside to BREAK the power connection with the dash lights and also the ECU, when they key was turned to START
so think of it this way, one click to ON would cause a normal situaiton, dash lights on, car ready to start...
turn further to START, and now you've broken the connection with the dash lights, and also the ECU...
so the car may be cranking over... but it will never fire, because the engine computer isn't getting it's ON signal anymore.
trust me, replace the switch... i took mine apart and spend a while testing it in my workshop, and it definitely failed on it's own, of old age
