that none of the dash instruments come to life when the ignition key is turned? That seems to point to there being a problem with just one particular position of the ignition switch - i.e. the "starter motor" position is OK (because it always cranks) and the "radio/headlamps" position is OK but the "everything else electrical" position is intermittently bad. Does that make sense?
