I welded a nut, the same size, onto the new drain plug. Never ruined another drain plug. The problem with the stock plug is it's chamfered at the outer edge and so is a normal socket. This gives only a small amount of area to wrench the bolt out. You can also grind the socket down, so that the outer edge is no longer chamfered. Also, if the bolt gets rounded off, Craftsman make a great extraction tool for striped/rounded bolts/nut that make it easy to remove. The tool has helix cut grooves and hammers onto the nut/bolt and grabs tight when turning.
