Collapsed Lifters/HELP!!!

Last week I went to start my car (92 9000 2.3t) and first it misfired, and then started knocking like a sewing machine. Up to this point it has been running very solid. Let it idle for a good 15 minutes, then took it for a ride, no power and knock, knock, knock. My Saab mechanic took a look at it and it appears to have to failed/collapsed lifters on one of the #3 & #4 cylinder intake valves. Both can be pushed on by hand and play at least 20mm.

I've opted to replace the failed lifters with new ones and the 14 remaining will be removed and cleaned by hand. From my knowledge the little ball/spring can accumulate dirt. Today, I had a discussion with my one of my professors, a former Delphi Automotive Engineer and he proposed the following:

The lifter failure could have been caused by lack of clean oil, lack of oil at lifter region or overheating/warping the head.

My concern is more what could have been damaged as a result of a broken/worn lifter. He said potentially the piston could hit the valve, damaging it. He also said that by running the engine after the failure could have damaged the camshaft or worn the heat treated coating, which would inevitably destroy the camshaft in the future, once exposed to engine temps. Also it may have caused wear on the crankshaft bearings

So I'm going to have the lifters (2) replaced what else should I have looked for? Would the head need to come off to inspect the valves or can they be removed once the tappets are? Failure occurred right at start up and was only driven for less than a mile and idled for 20 mins total.

Perhaps I know too much at this point for my own good. Ease my mind! THANKS
