I get about the same in London, allowing for the bigger Imperial gallons. Overall my consumption is usually 26 mpg Imperial, which is a bit less than 22 US - but on long trips I can cruise over 70 on the motorway and get 30 Imperial/25 US.

I live in the country try and my driving is a combination of local trips, the hundred-mile run up to London, and sitting in jams when I get there. I'm doing a bit better than you at highway speeds, but I used to do a lot better in my earlier CSE when I ran Pirelli P6000 tyres, the current Goodyear F1s are stickier and eat more fuel.

I just looked at the 1997 brochure (my car is a '97 2.3 fpt auto, same engine as yours) and though mathematics are not my strong point, converting 1 US gallon as 0.83 Imperial, Saab claim 16 UK/13.3 US in town, 34.4/28.6 extra-urban and 24.1/20 combined - these are all for standardised European tests which are best used for comparisons only. The Urban test includes a cold start phase.

Equivalent manual-gearbox figures are 20.3 UK/16.8 US urban, 38.7/32.1 extra-urban and 29.1/24.2 combined.

Remember that the auto box locks up in 4th gear but this is still lower-geared overall than fifth in a manual.

You might like to know that from Saab's figures, the 2-litre 150 bhp engine (which we got but you didn't) uses a tiny bit more fuel than the 2.3 litre 170 bhp version in the urban and extra-urban tests, but a tad less in the combined test. The 2-litre n/a with 130 bhp is the thirstiest of the lot. That's testing for you.
