Getting hot -- not quite overheating

Hey all -
Got a '92 9000 which has been running hotter than before. The temp gauge doesn't quite get up into the red (I turn on the heat before it does) but it does get close. I took it into my mechanic who ran it and said, well - we couldn't see anything. It got hot, the fan came on and there are no leaks.
So, no worries on his end. But I feel like it gets hot when it's driving, not running at a standstill.
Could this be related to anything else? I also need to get a new exhaust system -- could that need make the engine run hotter? (I'm out on limb here, but maybe?...)
Any ideas or things I can try? I'd rather not wait till it overheats and it's getting to be about 90degrees out-- running the heat is getting to be a less attractive stopgap. Thanks.
