Look on the bright side - it would be much worse if this happened just after you bought a new set of tires. I wouldn't rule out looking for a used tire, or two, especially if the tires you have on the car are no longer produced. You can often find a nice pair of used tires, such as local free internet classifieds or online auctions. Many of these originate from a lease turn-in, where the front tires were worn, and the person buying the CPO wanted four new tires, but the rears were too good to trash, so they end up being sold. If you do have 4 fairly well worn tires, then you will definitely want to buy tires in at least pairs. If you go for new now, you could buy the other pair next year, thus spreading the expense.
