In addition to the speedo gears, the speedo itself can die. (I had one that did.) This is important to remember, because otherwise just seeing that the driven gear is ok might lead him to automatically assume the drive gear in the transmission is faulty. It would be a lot of work to replace or rebuild a transmission only to discover there was nothing wrong with it.
Easy things to check: If I recall correctly, there are a couple of fuses on the back of the speedo, so check those first. Does the odometer still advance? If so, the problem is almost certainly one of the ultra-thin wires going to the meter movement. On mine, two of them had disconnected. This was actually a unit I got from an auto recycler, which is how I knew it was the speedo and not the transmission, because the old one still worked (was swapping in a metric unit for the mph one).
