Here's my recent experience with a failed speedo on my 98 5-speed. Indy hooked a drill up to the tranny end of the cable and determined that the speedo worked fine. Had to pull the tranny and replace the $10 gear inside. At 170,000 miles it was time for a new clutch and he also found some bad bearings in the tranny so I guess the speedo gear failure was a blessing in disguise.

Here's the ugly part of the story. He did put in a new slave but I was having problems with the pedal not returning. After multiple bleedings and other attempts turned out to be an "out of box" slave failure. Seven hours of labor later and a different new slave, all is well. No additional charge to me.
