This sounds *exactly* like when my car had its fuel-tank venting problem! The tank vent got clogged and operation of the engine pulled a vacuum in the tank. Eventually the fuel pump couldn't overcome the vacuum and the engine started stalling, just as if it was out of gas.
As in your case, I initially thought adding fuel fixed it, but really what fixed it was opening the gas cap.
In my case, the suction caused the fuel tank to collapse, crushing the fuel pump / level-sender assembly. So I had the privilege of replacing not only the venting components (filler neck and some hose), but the tank and pump.
On your car, look up in the right rear wheel well near the fuel filler. I bet you'll see a small rubber hose there that's cracked, possibly to the point of breaking into two pieces. That lets dirt into the venting system which is what starts all the fun...
