Strange Electrical Problem

1996 AERO - 168,000 miles - Yesterday on the way home from work, I noticed that the main EDU (Digitial Clock) display appeared dimmer than normal. Over the course of the next 5 minutes, I noticed that the dash display for the EDU readout (temp, voltage, milage, etc.) was out as were the (automatic trans)shift indicator lights. Then, suddenly, the temperature gauge and the fuel gauge powered down and finally, the speedometer and tach dropped to zero. All of this time, the car was running fine - no perceptable engine misses and the turbo gauge indicated normal range boost. As I began to pull off the highway in anticipation of the engine dying, there was a very slight engine shudder and suddenly, all the electrics sprang back to life. I continued home with no further problems, but I am a bit nervous about what will happen the next time. The part that really puzzles me is why the displays/instruments dropped out slowly, rather than abruptly failing and why they suddenly spang back to life at full power.
