Differential to output shaft has significant play

ON the drivers side there is significant play. When starting out in first Also make a hear wrenching 'popping' sound most noticeable at low speeds or turning or applying torque it is most noticeable. There is also a real jerking motion.
CV joints and tripod bearing are fine.
I have removed one of the five bolts holding the driver side stub shaft bearing cover on with a T-45 torx, but only one was able to be removed. Any tricks to this? Is this where diff bearings are located?
I see that differential bearings are available for this 5 speed transmission 1995 Aero. The gearbox has a tag "remanufactured unit" but my guess is the previous owner ran low on oil, maybe due to a leak, and this may have led to premature wear of bearing or even gears. Car runs great, 240k, but this 'popping' noise seems to be getting worse,
Is this box a ticking time bomb? Or repairable in situ? Thanks for advice.
