If I follow, you're describing the splines in the differential wheel inside the carrier. Normally they would move some with the stub shaft out. IIRC you shouldn't pull the LH inner driver at the same time unless you want to take apart the whole transmission. One or the other is enough to keep the differential wheels and pinions in place.
The play you're referring to can be taken up to some extent by the shims behind the plate on the LH inner driver. Setting that end play is tricky business to do right. I've done it once.
