Mine lives down south Posted by sam96CS [Email] (#852) [Profile/Gallery] (more from sam96CS) on Tue, 15 Sep 2009 20:48:49 In Reply to: Re: smooth idle with new ECU, Simon S, Tue, 15 Sep 2009 19:53:45 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Here salt is for grits, not roads, and my non-corroded straps were well grounded. During the fpt conversion I snipped the orange wire to ECU pin14 so the ECU thinks my transmission is manual, resulting in a slower idle. Even so it is smoother and steadier at idle. Perhaps the difference is the ECU is managing the turbo's wastegate rather than reacting, sometimes less than gracefully, to whatever the turbo throws at it.
It could be other things. I found for example that the same engine that ran well as a lpt with a .040" spark plug gap was much happier as a fpt with a .036" gap. Did closing the gap also improve the idle? Lots of variables to ponder.
The only way to know for sure is convert the car back to lpt. I'll get around to that the next time we get 3 feet of snow. :)
