First step is to bleed it. You should get more pedal back. If its a worn clutch, you are right.....it'll release at the top.
Look for a puddle of fluid at the bottom of the bellhousing after pumping the clutch a half dozen times or so. If you get fluid dripping out the bottom of the bellhousing, its the slave.
There really aren't a whole lot of pieces in the system. Slave, the line to it, clutch master and the line from the reservoir to the clutch master. Its obvious when the lines or slave go, as you can see fluid all over. When the clutch master goes, that's tougher to tell. Bleed it, and see how long it stays good. If it stays good for a day, keep looking for the culprit. If it stays good for a year, chalk it up to "huh...what the ___."
