update on turbo replacement 97 CSE Posted by swede-murphy [Email] (#6) [Profile/Gallery] (more from swede-murphy) on Tue, 29 Sep 2009 19:26:34 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My thanks to all who posted responses to my questions and to those in the archives. It took me two weeks, but worked off and on as time allowed weekends and evenings; real time about 8 hours total. Hit a snag in that the replacement turbo unit (used) had damage to the threads on the studs connecting the unit to the exhaust manifold, so I had to swap them out with the studs from the original. Needed to go to a welding shop to apply heat to get one of the damaged studs out. A hint to pass on - listen to those that suggest at least loosening the banjo fittings on the hard lines at the engine block end, otherwise it is very difficult (well, impossible) to get the bolts lined up and started. Old turbo had quite a lot of play in the shaft, and smoked consistently at idle. New unit has no play, and smoke problem has gone away; boost is strong and normal, as before. Thanks again for he help from this board!
