Hi mgw, I followed the steps in Quasimotors writeup when I started the removal. Good pictures, although of an earlier style set-up. Unfortunately, his pages are NLA and I don't know why; they were sort of "orphaned" but still available about a week or so ago, and the link had been posted here a few times (http://www.quasimotors.com/Procedures.htm). After the removal, I found the pages were not available, and still today are not. The Haynes manual is not too much help, but is at least another point of information. A search on turbo replacement gave a few more hints, then I asked some questions about the hardlines - if they should be removed at the turbo end or the engine end; both approaches will work, some banjo fittings are difficult to get to, but doable. The best suggestion from several sources was soaking all the connectors with PB Blaster; I did so daily for about 3 days prior to tearing into it, and the downpipe and manifold nuts came off easily. When reassembling, it is best to loosely connect the turbo to the downpipe, then the unit to the manifold, assuming the stay brace (attached to the catalytic converter) has been removed to allow a bit of movement in the downpipe/exhaust system. No matter if you disconnect the hardlines from the engine side or the turbo side, you will be miles ahead to at least loosen the connections at the other end.
If I had known the Quasi site was going to go away, I could have documented the process. This may become more and more of a problem as our cars age (and so do we) - the loss of valuable institutional memory. Perhaps we could convince Saabnet to "adopt" some of these orphan pages.
Feel free to email if you decide to go through this procedure, it was difficult (for my level of experience) but quite satisfying.
