I just went out and bled it again (bought more new, fresh DOT4), but this time, I closed the nipple on the bleed valve while holding the clutch pedal to the floor with a piece of flexible wood I made to fit the job (it bowed enough to hold pressure on the pedal).
When I drove it around the block a couple times, the pdeal felt like I feel it should. Clutch released in the right place etc. But we'll see if there is still air in there, and it works its way out once I drive some more. I'll drive it for a day or so, and we'll see.
Thanks for the advice!
