Congrats on the decision! Unfortunately it's all downhill after you have an Aero; there are so few cars that can match it across fuel economy, utility, comfort, performance, build quality, inexpensive replacement parts, etc.

Ideally, you want an Aero that has had some of the stinky repairs already handled: blower motor, AC Compressor, DI Cassette, steering rack, CV joints, etc.

Buy the cleanest car you can find; don't rely only on the presence of maintenance records, but do take note of the types of repairs the vehicle has had. Do NOT buy an accident car or salvage title.

I HIGHLY recommend having a Saab Indie mechanic give your car a thorough PPI. When I had mine done on my 94, it helped me negotiate almost $1200 off the price through diagnosis of a transaxle issue.

Understand that the transaxle is an issue on these cars given the current mileages. There are few options and most used units have the same mileage as the one that you currently have. Figure on about $2800 to have the trans and clutch replaced. Be wary of a rebuilt transaxle unless you pay to have one rebuilt. I lost a rebuilt trans about 8mos after it was installed due to a faulty speedo switch (the internal $20 piece).

The first change I'd recommend is upgrading to a 3" turbo back exhaust system. It drastically increases the turbo spool up and performance of the already capable stock car.

For reference, I bought my 94 5spd Aero 6yrs ago with 145K miles. I just finished a 900mi roadtrip on which the car turned 260K miles. I do 90% of my own repairs; most are minor irritances and can usually be fixed with a small amount of time dedicated. It's an incredibly satisfying car to drive and you won't find any other car to rival it for under $20K.
