Antifreeze corrected info Posted by Bill Homer [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: eeuro, saabsite, Ben, Thu, 15 Oct 2009 10:16:50 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I have been using Zerex G-05 coolant, which meets the Mercedes spec and costs what normal antifreeze goes for, about $10 per GALLON (not per 1.5 liter bottle). Unfortunately, my local AutoZone seems to have dropped it from what they stock, but it should be available elsewhere. You do not need to buy the overpriced imported antifreeze from Febi/Bilstein or Pentosin, this meets the same specs. Others have suggested using the newer "universal" antifreeze that is available everywhere.
The capacity of the cooling system for a 2.3 liter B234 engine is 10 quarts, which means that you will need 5 quarts to make a 50/50 mix - yes, you will need to buy two gallon bottles. I like to flush and drain the system as completely as I can, button up the open drains, add 5 quarts of undiluted antifreeze into the cooling system, then top up with purified water. I have found that after a flush there will always be some water remaining in the system, and filling it with a 50/50 mix will produce a final mix that is diluted with the leftover water.
