I have an 82 thermostat and 89 fan switch on my 88T and plan to switch the thermostat back to 89. I'm in VT but it does get hot sometimes in the summer. I've found it's not a big deal in hot weather to have the mismatch because the thermostat is almost always open and the fan is regulating the engine temp. On early 9ks the temp gauge is quite sensitive and I've observed rapid thermostat cycling in cold winter weather but not in the summer.
Hope that helps.
