Coincidence? Mistake? Transmission and powersteering

Two weeks ago my 97 9000CS (160,000 miles) lost its transmission (autobox). After some soul searching I decided to replace the tranny and hope to get a few more good years out of him. While the car was opened up, I also had the coolent flushed, oil changed and a new seal put on (to stop a small oil leak). I got the car back from my indy today and noticed something weird. Now when I try to turn at low speeds, the car makes a groan and the power steering is very stiff. This had never been an issue before I took the car in. When I talked to my indy he said the power steering pump was probably weak and that was the issue.
What I'm wondering is if there is something that could have gone wrong when the tranny was replaced that could have affected the power steering pump? Or is this just a horrible coincidence (more things going wrong when I'm trying to convince my girlfriend that I should hold onto the car...)
Thanks for any help you've got!
