why the inner driver?

Inside cv joint isn't attached to the inner driver - it just pulls out. The boot clamps to the driver, but that's it for retention.
There's also room in the driver cup so that you can start driving the outer end of the shaft out of the hub. Once it loosens up, then undo the knuckle to strut bolts - those have always been the b*tch for me, not the splines. Good thing the hardware store stocks a replacement metric bolt of the right grade.
You also don't need a puller to get the inner tripod off - you can drive it off w/hammer and drift if the shaft is clamped in a vice. Saran wrap is a good trick. I've heard others use a rubber band around them too.
