When I had the clutch slave issue (brand new genuine slave) it was only causing problems (heavy, sluggish and pedal slow to come up) when the car had been driven for a while and was warmed up. When it was cold, like after being parked overnight, the clutch felt fine.
The mechanic who told me about this problem with the slave cylinders, also said that it would go away by itself as the grease was "worn in", if I had the patience for it. I decided to give it a chance and a couple of weeks later the problem had disappeared.
