I have a '95 and '96. The '95 had decent maintenance, while the '96 had excellent, almost compulsive servicing. They have about the same miles on them (164K), but the '96 is in much better shape. Regular, consistent maintenance over their life is essential and these cars seem to respond to it. But there are some "bad ones" out there. It's just hard to catch up if you have one that's not been kept on top of. My '95 is harder to keep up with than the '96. Runs fine, but more little stuff goes south.

My #2 daughter's '99 9-3 has 149K on it and runs perfectly. But the PO was a neighbor who was totally compulsive about maintenance and the car was excessively maintained. It really makes a difference long term.
