The sloppiness could be the bushings in the shifter, but it's much more likely the motor mounts. They go bad easily, especially with oil leaks, and the engine can MOVE when they're bad. Fresh mounts make a huge difference, and the job isn't too hard. Bad mounts could explain the shiter poping out in second under throttle. Fingers crossed that that is the case instead of a bad box.
It sounds like you'll need to get the firewall welded up to fix the master cylinder issue.
Did you eventually get the system to bleed? If so, are you loosing fluid? If you are, it's usually the slave cylinder, if not it's usually the master cylinder. The line between the master the slave has been know to go out too, so give it a good look over.
