There are 3 point5sw on the shifter than can 'go' The Big white plastic Ball (main fulcrum for the shift shaft) Can have it's retaining system broken (ham handede Gear operators basically) so the ball can move up and down. Can you pull your shift lever up? Also it needs periodic regreasing.
There are also 2 wee white plastic bushes (for the shaft 'under' the Ball joint) that wear out fairly commonly.. Eeuroparts even sells replacements.
Occaisionaly aged rubber hydraulic lines can swell and seal off their inner diameters. Usually causing a one way valve. This one I've seen/dealt with, But it is quite rare.
