Running rough - sounds like an EVO! horrid!

Hi all, long time no visit!
A quickie for you after I've searched around:
1998 9000 Aero - 132K miles
After a particularly enthusiastic bit of driving on the way back from a meeting...later that day I was driving home and accelerating moderately onto the motorway/freeway and i felt a thud - then car ran rough - like it was firing on 3 cylinders - juddering when under load/acceleration - when pulling away it has that horrible rich juddery sound like a ricer EVO. At idle it just judders like crazy and I am having to rev it to 1500 revs just to even out the vibrations.
I checked the CEL flash codes and it flashes 3 followed by 7, which I checked and it suggests Air Intake temperature sensor followed by rich mixture.
I know enough to accept that it would run rich if ATT was faulty/dirty but would it really cause such juddering like that?
My worry is frankly that I've done something expensive to the car, although for two days it suddenly cleared up and ran fine, then reverted to vibrator mode, so I doubt it is anything mechanical.
My vacuum gauge (the dash one) shows good vacuum and boost.
Car was fitted recently a couple of months ago) with Abbott stage 1 remapped ECU.
I know the flash codes can be misleading, so question is if the ATT was faulty/dirty would the resulting richness cause the loss of power and juddering and lumpy running to the degree I've described or have I done something expensive?
