First swap tires, then take it to a pro Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Sun, 20 Dec 2009 18:16:42 In Reply to: Pulling to the left – rear toe out of spec, 97aeroMN, Sun, 20 Dec 2009 09:57:30 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My advice is to try swapping the tires around and if that doesn't fix it, bite the bullet and take it to a pro.
I had rear wheel bearings in my Audi A4 Quattro (with 4 wheel independent suspension, on the rear it is possible to set camber and toe) at a local tire/service shop. They pulled out the rear suspension upright to press in/out the bearing, and didn't pay attention to the camber marks that I had scribed on the adjustment cams; car came back with the cams in a different place and it handled squirreley over bumps. Trying to make good, they realigned it for free, made it worse, realigned it again, and made it even worse than before. This work was done with a computerized laser-guided machine.
Next, I took it to a well regarded shop that does alignment work ONLY. They sorted out problems on my Alfa Spider years before and are well known in the local car and racing club community. They told me that the rear toe was off by almost a half inch, redid the alignment to as good as new. Their setup recorded and corrected for bent wheels, which perhaps the other shop didn't do.
