Rear Bushings, tappet wrench Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Mon, 21 Dec 2009 08:53:10 In Reply to: Re: First swap tires, then take it to a pro, 97aeroMN, Sun, 20 Dec 2009 21:04:30 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
From what I understand, there is some likelihood that you will need to replace bushings #15 (Rear swaybar bushing (to hub))and #16 (Bushing (Rear Axle to Spring Link))in the picture as the shock bolt will be quite frozen to the inner sleeves; obviously you will probably also need a new rear shock mounting bolt. I would think that #17 also sees some wear, but I don't recall reading of anyone replacing theirs - note that a recent tightening of the mounting bolts for this bushing (and anything else that I could get a wrench on) eliminated a lot of noise from the rear.
I have been wanting to tighten the upper shock mountings, but find that I need a thin 16mm or 5/8 inch open-end wrench to do so. Do you have idea where one can get just this wrench without buying an entire "tappet wrench" set (I haven't adjusted tappets since my 1971 Volvo, and didn't need a tappet wrench for that)? You are probably going to need this as well to remove the rear shock.
