Agree - cams don't have to come off until the cyl head is off the car. However, if you're lifting it by yourself, you might want to take off as much as possible. One thing that should be mentioned is that when removing the cams, back off the bolts a little at a time. I did 1/4 turn on each bolt, going over every bolt, then 1/4 more, until they were all loose. Same with re-installation.
Get yourself some small containers - 16 of them - for your hydraulic cam followers. I also put my bolts in there. Note that the bolts that are on the spark plug side of each camshaft are different. They have a groove to channel oil. Keep these separate, in a marked container. The two types of bolt are not interchangeable.
Overall, mark everything with masking tape, and write on the tape what it is. When you re-install, remove the tape as you go. You'll see if there's something you forgot to hook up, because there'll be that little tag on it.
Re-installing the head - You'll want three people - two to hold the head and one to hold the timing chain up. Get your gasket in place and put on your anaerobic gasket maker at the timing chain end. Get a bungee cord, attach it to the timing chain, and have someone hold that up. Bring over the cylinder head, and have them hold the chain up while they pass the bungee cord through the hole in the cyl head that takes the timing chain. Then they lift the bungee cord up and attach it to the hood of the car, which will be raised, of course. Slowly lower the cyl head into position, noting the little metal "dowels" (Haynes calls them this - there really hollow, short metal tubes, about 1 cm long) for alignment. It takes a bit of maneuvering to get the cyl head over the tall timing chain guide, but it's not that bad. Lots of communication between mechanics as you do this, and go slowly. You don't want to drop the cyl head onto the new gasket. Good luck. I've done it twice, and I've learned you need lots of helpers.
