I had that same issue in my 94 Aero. Drove it for almost 2yrs without a Speedo and dealt with the stalling on decel. I actually got pretty good at giving the gas a slight blip after pulling it out of gear and that would keep it from stalling.
Here are your 3 solutions:
1) change nothing and drive the car without a speedo.
2) remove and repair your trans speedo gear and do the necessary rebuild on worn parts.
3) acquire a new/used/rebuilt trans and junk the old one.
2 & 3 cost about the same. I'd never buy an off the shelf rebuild again. My first trans just killed itself after about 165K miles. The rebuilt one lasted ~8mos before the internal speedo gear went bad. It was apparently not a part that is replaced as a matter of routine. Not so funny to have a $20 plastic part inside your rebuilt $1400 transmission fail and turn it into a useless pile of crap. Ended up buying a used one and having that tossed in and it's been smooth sailing ever since.
