Just did this the other day. idiots at GM have loctighted(?) the axle into the hub bearing. Result is ine cannot easily split the outer CV joint using the internal circlip provided for the purpose. PITA.. what was a 1 hour job is now a 2+ hour job.
Admittedly I was much faster on this axle as compared the other side which was the first encounter with this stuck axle issue.
I undid the Bottom ball joint (3 wee bolts only).. Then the clamps on the Inner CV boot then just pulled the tripod out of it's housing..YES! there is lotsa room to do this. Undid the circlip folding the tripod onto the axle then I had to hammer (V carefully) the thing off the splines. These are on Wayyy to tight on the 97 IMO. Then slide the inner CVv booy off, then remove the remains of the outer CV boot.
Clean and repack the outer CV Slide the new boot back on (I use Zip ties rather than the metal band things ..having done so for 15 years sans any issues whatsoever) Slide on the Inner CV boot Refit the tripod and circlip, repack wirth fresh grease and refit. Do up the 3 ball joint bolts and job's Done.
