Its not possible to slip in a 2.3 head gasket, the timing chain guides protrude into the head far enough the head would have to raised several inches for the gasket to slide in. Sounds like a cleanliness issue, gunk in the oil passages, on the head and intake manifold surfaces. Possibly an after market gasket that isn't quite right.
