There is a baffle on the inside of the valve cover that will keep the rubber piece from getting into the engine. You can verify this by shining a flashlight down the hole. You won't see the camshaft, just the baffle bottom. You should be able to fish the remnant out of the valve cover with a bent piece of wire, or even better, with one of those sharp hooks that you use to remove O-rings.
Of course, it won't hurt to remove the valve cover and shake out the offending rubber piece. You will still need a hook to pull it through the hole, since the ring is larger than the hole. If you do take the cover off, put a new valve cover gasket on. The old one won't reseal unless it was changed very recently.
