They're probably still dealing on those pretty aggressively.
As a driver of a 2009 Jetta TDI, I'd highly recommend the Golf, HOWEVER, what engine are you considering? Like the Subaru, the gas Golf gets disappointing fuel economy. Diesels are like gold...no, like platinum...very hard to find an no deals available. But if you can swing it, it's still a competitive value compared to the Subaru, and will be a better drive.
I agree with comments about Subaru seats; in fact that goes double for Civic seats, and applies to all the Asian makes in one form or another. Just don't have the talent for seat design.
I would strongly recommend against any post-9000 Saab, unfortunately. Think you can really safely avoid the sludge issue and its engine-destruction tendencies? So did I. Twice. Never again. And I do my own work. Just the diagnosis of oil issues would be costly, to say nothing of trying to fix the aftermath. Replacement engines are in short supply, because essentially, they're dropping like flies and have been for years. Besides which, they're fairly elderly cars now. Another 9000 would be a better route.
