The VW issues you raise are in my mind, too. I don't think the basic Golf would wind up being a long term car. So a lease on one is really money wasted.
I figure Hondas are nice, and they are well made, but the Insight and Fit are really just commuter cars. I can't imagine being in either on a long trip. Just too busy feeling at 70-80. And the handling seemed kinda weak. For what they are meant for they're fine.
Haven't checked the insurance yet, and it's also part of the decision. And is part of the appeal of an older car.
Her 9K will likely require at least $1,200 parts and labor, to get the A/C repaired, even with used parts. Needs a heater core, too. I haven't really been able to really inspect the car thoroughly in several months, and I'm sure it needs some other things, too. While it's a known quantity, it seems as if it needs too much for what we'd get for the money spent, especially if I do some preventive replacements, like DI and fuel pump. If she was gonna be local, I'd keep it and just whittle away at its needs. The timing on this move is what's putting pressure on this deal. She has to be in NM June 20.
Her gig is w/ Bureau of Land Management and we're seeing if she can get by out there without a car--depends on the job demands. If she can, we keep the 9K here and I fix it up so it's ready when she comes back in Dec.
