Thanks for the detailed synopsis, it really helps!

Yes I have a new Robinair professional vacuum pump (5cfm) and a complete set of Yellow-Jacket professional A/C R134 gauges, plus a couple of cans of R134A (these cans are a few years old, do they expire ?). So all I need is some oil, dye and a few more cans and a cool day to get started.

I also have a good HVAC book on all the specifics of AC testing and charging, and I do have a 2-car garage to work in (with an '04 9-5Aero in the other stall). I was a mechanical engineer/computer major by training, so expect I can do this.

I also have a good source for hydaulic hose repair at reasonable prices if I find my hoses leaking. My car saw it's first snow this past winter (previous life in California, so maybe my condensor isn't too bad. Thanks for the heads-up on the condensor.

I don't trust any of those DIY recharge kits, because they only measure one side of the pressure curve, which doesn't tell you the whole story and can be dangerous, but to each his own.
