I'm not that familiar with the pre-1994 ECUs, but on 1994+ Trionic systems an "adaptation run" is needed so the ECU can set various parameters, i.e. fuel mixture, spark timing, boost settings. Basically, you find a wide open uphill stretch and give the car wide open throttle between two RPM points - do a search on this site. Not sure if this applies to 1991 cars though.
