Rust is the culprit. I live in Chicago and make several trips to northern Michigan in the winter. Lots of exposure to salt. The salt pellets tend to bounce up and break the paint/rust protection under the wheel wells and, especially, under the doors. Body shop guys tell me that a major engineering defect in the 9000 is how the bottom of the doors stick out and are exposed to road crap flung up by the front tires.

Shortly after deciding to keep my 1995 CSE (158k) and putting $1800 into it (ball joints, rear shocks (ouch!)DI Cassette (#3),valve cover gasket, rear bumper repainted at body shop, audio head, AC sensor), I noticed a 4" paint bubble at bottom of passenger door. Jacked the car up and found that 3 of the 4 doors have significant rust on the bottoms. I've learned the hard way that body work is best left to the pros, so my choices are to 1) pay the body shop guys; 2) buy replacement doors--which will likely have to be repainted; or 3)violate my own rule and spend a couple of weekends sanding and painting, knowing all the while that it won't last more than a couple of winters. First two options are too expensive, so I'm looking at spending time I don't have on work I dislike, knowing all the time that RUST NEVER SLEEPS!

Hindsight is perfect, but if I had caught the rust before the recent round of repairs, I would have given the car away (can't get any $ for them in Chitown), bought a used 9000 from CA or the South, made the mechanicals right, and ended up with a great car that would last another 5+ years, at not much more cost than I'm going to end up putting into my CSE.
