Hi Techlectic,
If you are using SAAB inner boots they should be long enough to go over the inner driver. There is a slight groove in the axle at the tripod end where the small clamp should go. Placing only the inner boot over the tripod should allow you feel the small end of the boot engage (slight "click," for lack of a better description) that groove indicating that the boot is in the right spot. Removing the small clamp may help to get it over the cup but it'll be a bit of a pain to get a good grip on it later. The other thing that will cause resistance is air in the boot. If you get one edge started you should be able to push the boot right up and over the cup lip. once you get the boot on straighten it out so that there are no twists before you clamp it (I learned that after the fact). Look at the axle that came out of the car and you'll see/feel the slight notch where the small clamp "rides." I hope this helps.
