Chalk it up to indifferent craftsmanship! I am always cautious around the heating of joints, lest components get fried. But apparently in the orange relay I didn;t put quite enough heat on when reflowing, so the cracks were not completely eliminated. I'm using a dual-heat pencil, 15W and 30W, and used the 30W setting to get a quick melt before the heat could travel too far down the line. But in retrospect I was too quick.
When I last reported on this to the bulletin board, it was the *red* relay pins that I had reflowed a second time, with no success. Tonight, once I got the orange one apart (boy is it hard to get that cover off with three flanges and only two hands!) and remelted a couple of the joints, all lights are operational.
Thanks to Sam and the others who made suggestions. What a great and helpful community.
